    Dr. Bing Ni is currently working with Prof. Huamin Qu in the Computer Science & Engineering Department of The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST), and her job duties mainly include research projects coordination and research team management. Before joining academy institution, Dr. Ni had 5-year post-doctorate experience in industry, including Noah's Ark Lab Huawei Technologies and Applied Science & Technology Research Institute. Her last title at Noah's Ark Lab is a Researcher.

    Dr. Ni got her Ph.D. degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong at 2011, and her Master and Bachelor degree from Nanjing University of Posts & Telecommunications (NJUPT), Nanjing, Jiangsu, at 2003 and 2000 respectively. Her supervisor during her postgraduate is Prof. Kwong-Sak Leung, and her thesis title is entitled as "Generalized Pattern Matching Applied to Genetic Analysis".

    As a researcher, her main research focus is on big data analysis and visual analytics in general. The research projects that she is coordinating go to two categories. One category is urban informatics with machine learning and visual analytics, of which we analyze the co-occurrence patterns in urban human mobility. We are the very first to use mobile broadband data and social media data for these mobility analysis. The other category is online learning visual analytics, e.g. students' basic statistics, geographical information, students' video watching, students' interaction in forum, and general learning behavior analysis in online learning platforms. VisMOOC is the first tool that can perform in-depth analysis, and can be applied to both massive open online courses (MOOCs) and small private online courses (SPOCs). It is proudly developed by VisLab.
